The Lapita people are the earliest known people to have lived on the islands of Fiji. QoQo was one of their first landing places...

The Lapita people were extraordinary, their intimate relationship with the ocean is further underscored by their voyaging ability.

They made pottery, some of which they decorated with intricate and exquisite designs known as dentate stamping.

The designs included stylized faces which were most elaborate during the early years of their migration and clearly carried cultural significance.

Evidence of their habitation on QoQo around 1,100BC by way of pottery sherds and stone tools has recently been discovered.

It now seems certain that QoQo, along with nearby sites at Bourewa and Rove, were the very first places in the Fiji Islands to be permanently settled.
